Teaching in farming

 

At Mas Bes we don’t just live in the rural world, we also teach and train farm work at our home. You’ll discover what’s hidden behind a farm and how it works.

Visits

At Mas Bes we offer a complete rural experience for all types of group. With the teaching in farming we offer, you’ll learn how a farm works, how the animals live and you’ll discover all the benefits of our milk.

Family visits

Family groups will have a great time in a farming environment perfectly suited to the youngest children. If you book, you can stay for lunch, and round it off with a great experience where you’ll learn the secrets of farming.

The complete Mas Bes visit includes a tour of all the areas of the farm:

– Inside the milk interpretation center you will discover the whole process in making our milk.

You’ll visit the Farming Museum.

You’ll see the Mas Bes miniature farm, divided into 9 modules, where all the processes of the farm and crops

You’ll discover the biogas plant: at Mas Bes we obtain electrical energy through the manure.

Hair and feathers: the children can have fun feeding calves, rabbits, geese, piglets, ducks, lambs, goat kids, donkeys, ponies or hens with our “Hair and feathers” activity. They’ll be able to stroke the animals and enjoy the experience of being a farmer with them. They can even milk the cow named Bes!

To complete a 100% farming visit we recommend you to stay for lunch at Mas Bes. You’ll be able to choose from various menus prepared by the Viñolas family using products of the farm itself.

Sunday afternoon closed

An activity in which the children will become farmers for a day. They’ll be able to stroke and feed the Mas Bes animals: lambs, goat kids, rabbits, donkeys, ponies, hens and other birds.

In addition, with our teaching in farming they’ll also learn how to milk with the farm’s most famous cow: Bes. An experience to bring the world of farming to the children.

Technical visits

We organise visits for professional veterinarians, farmers or engineers, to show them how the Mas Bes stabling functions.

The visits can be done in various languages: Catalan, Spanish, French and English.

Veterinarians

We organise visits for professional veterinarians, in which they can discover at first hand how the animals of our stabling live and the treatments they follow.

 

Farmers

Being farmers, we prepare visits so that other farmers can learn how the stabling functions and the processes we carry out on the farm. We tell the story of how Mas Bes went from having 4 Holstein-Frisian cows to almost 1,200.

 

Engineers

We offer specialised visits to engineers to show them the Mas Bes facilities. Such as the equipment in the milking hall or the biogas plant, which functions using slurry from our cows and provides 250kW/h of electricity.

Team Building

At Mas Bes we also organise Team Building days. Ideal for disconnecting from work and everyday life, in idyllic surroundings We give you a break from routine and reinforce the ties between colleagues.

School visits

Schools are also welcome at Mas Bes. School children will be able to make a complete visit to the facilities: enjoy the “Hair and feathers” activity, the corn workshop and finish off the day with a meal made with produce of Mas Bes or in the picnic area which has a children’s playground. Boys and girls will enjoy an authentic farm experience. We have a picnic area and covered areas in case of bad weather.

Elderly group visits

We organise farm visits aimed at elderly groups, in which they can enjoy a complete tour accompanied by a member of the Viñolas family. With our information on farming, they’ll discover all the aspects of country life at Mas Bes and they’ll be one more farmer for a day.

To round off the visit, we encourage you to have a meal at Mas Bes so that you can enjoy local produce prepared in our workshop. Menus with food from our farm and its surrounding area.

Different areas visited

At Mas Bes we have a great variety of areas, completely adapted, to visit and to guide you on an exciting tour through Catalan farming.

Small animals area

You can stroke and feed different animals: We have lambs, goats, rabbits, donkeys, a pony, hens and a variety of birds.
Option: Corn workshop, where we finish by giving the hens the food we’ve prepared. You can also milk the plastic cow. This area is accompanied by a mural of various farm animals, cows, a farmer milking by hand and children eating dairy products.

Rearing and weighing

The children can give the calves fresh grass and then learn about the people needed to weigh a cow on our scales.

Suckling calves

We visit the calf area, where they are still suckling and live together in sheds in groups of 5.

Feeding area - Raw materials store

Area used to prepare the cows’ food rations of different cereals, fodder, straw, alfalfa, beer bagasse, minerals, etc., and where we keep the trailer (thermomixer) that’s used to make and distribute the mixture.

Irrigation pool

We use all the rainwaters to irrigate our fields. And we also have a good squad of ducks.

Biogas and composting plant

All the organic matter that is produced by the biogas process goes to a solids separator and we use it to make ideal compost for gardening and growing vegetables.

Fattening pigs

Every half year we fatten 4 Duroc breed pigs that are used to complement the visits to the farm. And when the time comes, we make delicious hams and Catalan sausages.

Pre-fresh cows

These are the cows that will be giving birth in less than 2 months. They have special food, background music and are brushed, all to improve their wellbeing.

Production cows

We have these in 5 different courtyards. They are the cows we milk 3 times every day. They are also brushed, have music and automatic cleaning systems.

Dairy and milking hall

The dairy is the area where we have the tanks for cooling and storing the milk at its optimum temperature: 3ºC.
2 x 16 parallel milking hall. We milk 32 cows at a time and the milk goes directly to the cooling tank.

Spectacular Mas Bes miniature Divided into 9 sections, the miniature is interactive and allows you to get to know all the farming processes that we carry out on the farm, from fertilisation of the fields to the actual harvest. We will also be able to view the audiovisual clip “Animal Wellbeing”, where we explain the day-to-day of the animals that live at Mas Bes.

Educational museum of the rural world

Old oil process. / Grape harvest and oil production. / Churning. / Firewood and charcoal process. / Flour and bread process. / Old tractors collection. / Cows, steers and horses, equipped to do different jobs. / Collection of over 100 churns of different sizes. / Exhibition of basketmaking of La Selva (Jaume Vilà Collection). / Exhibition of different farmhouses and hermitages of La Selva (Manel Ripoll Collection). / Exhibition of different traditional measures of capacity and weight.

Exhibition of animals in our surroundings:
A collection that goes back over 50 years, donated by Mr. Miquel Puig and Irene Berga and authorised by the Department of Fauna of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia on behalf of the “Nature and Rural World of La Selva” Association. Over 350 different animals (mammals, reptiles, fish, birds, etc.)

Tasting

We round off the visit by sampling some Mas Bes artisan flatbread and milk.

Our spaces

To provide an informative close-up of the rural world and the operation of our farm, at Mas Bes we have two rooms where we provide education sessions adapted to: kindergartens, primary and secondary schools and technical groups. Discover how Mas Bes operates from the inside. Enjoy a unique rural tourism experience in the province of Girona.

El Safareig

An educational space aimed at kindergartens and children under 6 years old. At El Safareig, the youngest children can have lunch after visiting the farm and having a great time in the country park. The space has a playground where the kids can play with the cereal harvester, the tractor and our cow.

Furnishings: air-conditioning, tables, chairs, TV, own bathroom, microwave, fridge, outdoor barbecue, garden furniture and private playground.

Les Oliveres

Les Oliveres is a newly-created enclosure converted into a Mas Bes milk learning centre. The room where the story is told of the dairy production of our farm and our region, as well as all the benefits of milk consumption for the organism.

An educational space adapted for primary and secondary schools, as well as university and technical groups, with capacity for 200 people. The space is enclosed, and when the visit to the farm has finished, it can host lunches and activities. In addition, the space is equipped with a playground for the over-fives and a terrace. An ideal place to enjoy a complete day in the country.

Furnishings: air-conditioning, tables, chairs, TV, sound system, own bathroom, kitchen (with microwave, fridge and butane gas stove), outdoor barbecue, garden furniture and private playground.
